iBeacon: Digital Extension into the Physical World

The iBeacon is a compact Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device designed to bridge the gap between physical retail spaces and digital experiences. It wirelessly communicates with nearby smartphones to deliver location-based messages such as promotions, product information, and personalized content without requiring user interaction. Built with a low-power Bluetooth module, it ensures long battery life, reliable signal performance, and seamless integration into retail environments for enhanced in-store engagement.

The Challenge

Back in 2015, retailers looked for a way to connect their physical stores with the fast-paced digital world. Mobile apps were on the rise, but communication inside stores was mostly still analog.

Tektos Ecosystems’ team identified an opportunity: a small, quiet device that could exist in a retail space and automatically send contextual information to a shopper’s phone—product details, promotions, or personalized messages—without needing the user to scan a QR code or search for information.

We wanted to a hardware platform that was compact, reliable, affordable, and compatible with new Bluetooth Low Energy standards. It needed to function well in busy, noisy retail areas and fit seamlessly into a brand’s existing digital system.

Our Approach

We developed the iBeacon system from scratch, beginning with the electronics and extending to the mobile app experience.

We created a discreet enclosure that could blend in with any retail environment. It had to be durable, easy to mount, and small enough to go unnoticed while still providing strong Bluetooth performance.

The core of the project was a custom low-power Bluetooth module. Our firmware team designed a stable broadcast signal while minimizing energy usage to ensure long battery life. We built the device so retailers could install dozens, or even hundreds, of beacons without worrying about maintenance.

Since these would be used in commercial spaces, we conducted extensive environmental and signal-strength tests to ensure reliable communication even with interference from Wi-Fi, metal shelving, and large crowds. We also guided the complete certification process, so the product met regulatory and radio-compliance standards across markets.

To finish the system, we created a companion app framework that allowed retailers to share relevant content based on proximity. This added a new level of in-store interaction—simple for users and powerful for brands.

The Result

The iBeacon project became our first fully integrated retail-communication platform, changing how brick-and-mortar stores could engage with customers. It allowed apps to accurately detect user location and send contextual messages with ease.

Retailers gained a new digital touchpoint within their physical space—one that improved store navigation, provided personalized promotions, and created richer customer experiences.

For us, the project highlighted the value of combining industrial design, embedded engineering, and mobile software into a single unified product. It set the stage for future connected-retail solutions and showed how small hardware can significantly enhance the in-store experience.
